Protium selects Aveva to scale green hydrogen through digitalisation
A UK-based green hydrogen energy solutions provider has selected industrial software company Aveva to help accelerate the development, optimisation, and scalability of its green hydrogen production through advanced digital technology.
Under a new partnership, Protium aims to scale and optimise its green hydrogen output, with Aveva powering the scale-up via digital tools that can help reduce emissions, costs, and complexity.
Protium claims that by deploying Aveva solutions to date, they have reduced time spent by staff on process simulation by 30 per cent, increased reliability by 15 per cent, and helped identify targets to reduce maintenance spend by a further 15 per cent.

The hydrogen infrastructure developer, owner and operator is aiming to save up to 256,000 tons of CO2 per year. Protium stated that Aveva solutions could help it save an additional five to 10 per cent by optimising process design and utility consumption.
By deploying Aveva’s solutions, Protium – the UK’s “largest” green hydrogen developer – will reportedly benefit from smart monitoring and control, certified and traceable electricity origin, optimised plant operations, reduced downtime, and enhanced reliability.
Jon Constable, Chief Operating Officer (COO) at Protium, said: “By working closely with Aveva, we’ve developed the right set of digital tools to enable Protium to deliver green hydrogen at scale – critical at this point when we are set to open a second hydrogen production plant and growing our project portfolio.”
Aveva’s CEO, Caspar Herzberg, explained that the transition to Net Zero through emerging technologies will require flexible digital infrastructure.
Caspar Herzberg said: “The data platform we’ve developed for Protium is tailored to manage a resilient and agile digital infrastructure in a cost-effective manner, leveraging the full potential of Protium’s industrial intelligence.”

Last January, the firm secured over £31 million in Series B funding to fast-track its UK-based hydrogen projects and advance the commercial deployment of its existing portfolio, which includes its Pioneer 1 project in Wales.
